The Broken Hearted

I've been reading a 500 pg. collection of Ernest Hemmingway stories lately. None of the stories truly moved me until I reached the last paragraph of "Ten Indians" last night at about 1:30 AM. The story is about a guy named Nick Adams who finds out from his father that a girl he likes was fooling around with another guy. Nick has gone to bed, and...

"After a while he heard his father blow out the lamp and go into his own room. He heard a wind come up in the trees outside and felt it come in cool through the screen. He lay for a long time with his face in the pillow, and after a while he forgot to think about Prudence and finally he went to sleep. When he awoke in the night he heard the wind in the hemlock trees outside the cottage and the waves of the lake coming in on the shore, and he went back to sleep. In the morning there was a big wind blowing and the waves were running high up on the beach and he was awake a long time before he remembered that his heart was broken."

Here's to the heartbroken on this fine late August day. May they all forget, for a while.

Bless you and (never thought I'd say it) bless Hemingway for that very appropriate paragraph. Good work, Blogagaard.

A lot of people don't know this, but Hemingway actually discovered the secret to forgetting heartbreak.

It's called booze, although in his time it was actually called whiskey, or whatever was on tap.

The more you know...

Actually, the real secret was a shotgun blast to the head. That'll make you forget anything.
