The New York Times has been doing an excellent job of covering the Minneapolis bridge collapse. This link takes you to a slide show of images.
In an odd way, this whole event has made Sarah and I slightly homesick, as if we should be in the Cities watching the local news and trying to take a gander at the fallen bridge. In a positive note, I've been sort of shocked by how many people survived such a crazy thing, especially during bumper to bumper traffic. One death is too many, but when I first saw the pics on the Internet I expected the body count to be in the hundreds.
Just when you think everything is normal, wham, the world goes apocalyptic on your ass.

I walked as close as I could get from the UMN on Thursday. It was a goddamn zoo on the 4th street bridge over 35W just north of the collapse. News crews were set up there, along with probably 200 gawkers (me included) and police who have the roads close by blocked off.
It is odd to say the least to see that bridge in the news so much. But, from what I have heard, the way the bridge fell saved more then a few from instant death.
Count your blessings guys, traffic around here is worse then ever. Thanks Pawlenty!
The national media attention is really creepy. When Todd and I went down by 4th Street and 35W we saw Charlie Gibson and a whole 3 ring circus of media standing around where I used to live when I was in college. I was trying to take in this jolting change in the landscape and the tragic human loss/damage and these non-Minneapolitan people were mucking it all up.
