Yesterday, my girl Suzie Noizebox and I were meandering around Boise trying to find a decent bike for under $30 (everyone rides bike in Boise, because it's about eight blocks in size) when we came upon this small Japanese electronics/antiques store nestled in a crappy strip mall. We went inside simply because it looked so odd, and found a small, narrow room divided by one long shelf. The first "side" of the store was crammed with brass knickknacks and paddy whacks, of all shapes and sizes, and the other side was filled with used stereos, TVs, and DVD players. Strange dichotomy, eh? And how to explain the young Asian lad who didn't even look up or acknowledge us as we shopped? True, he was watching Maury Povich, but still. I found a used Nintendo 64 gaming system in a plastic tub, complete with four games (including Zelda!), three controllers, two rumble packs, and a memory card. The price? Twenty dollars for the whole shebang-bang. What did I have in my pocket? Exactly twenty dollars. I had no change, Suzie Noizebox was tapped, but oh did I want that system at that price. So what happened? I showed him the crisp twenty and he rang up the whole order without charging me tax, telling me he couldn't give me a receipt and laughing off the idea of me being able to return the system if it didn't work.
So now we wonder, where did all those used electronics come from? Taken during mafia revenge hits, most likely, though I found no blood on the system and it works just fine, which might be the strangest part of the story.
