Hold Steady

Whoa. Did anyone else just see The Hold Steady rock the Dave Letterman show? I was just flipping through and wham, they rocked my face off. I didn't think it was possible to really rock a talk show, but they were close. I expected the crowd to just go wild after the song but it was the same polite applause as always. Steady applause.

Sometimes life's just about holding steady. Holding steady is harder than you'd think, isn't it? I think that's something you realize more as you get older. As a kid, you think everything is steady by nature and that your life will exist in the way it's always existed because that's all you've ever known. What you don't realize is that adults have been working very hard behind the scenes to give you at least some sense of security, some sense of an ordered and structured world. Americans love steadiness. That's why fluctuating gas prices freak us out so much, that's why 9/11 seemed so damn surreal. Our villages aren't raided periodically, our lives aren't rife with civil war.

Now, I have to go buy a CD. Keep that all-important economy flowing.

So maybe there is some strength in holding things steady?

Definitely. Right now, we're sending 22,000 fresh troops just to get Iraq to try and hold steady!

I saw the Hold Steady - they rocked the joint! Kind of a weird Bruce
Springsteen singer-sound for a more upbeat rocking band, but definitely energetic! The falsetto harmony vocals from the keyboardist were a little geeky, but maybe that's the appeal of mushing together some otherwise-disparate pop music elements.

You should have seen them in the sold out Mainroom. Holy crap! They rocked my face off! What I have now is a face implant.

They were so stoked to be there and Craig Finn talked about how it had been a dream of his to sell out the Mainroom. Best. Rock. Show. of. 2007.

Plus Sarah G was there!

Awesome, Missy. I wish I was hip like you (:

Rand, I too was reminded of Springsteen, in fact I wondered if they were going to intro into "Jungleland".

I love that song!
